It has a Horticulture and Forestry University, which is first of its kind in Asia. It is a centre of excellence and learning. In the British period this town enjoyed a special status because of its proximity to Shimla queen of hills and once summer capital of India and pleasant weather. It also has a brewery that was established in 1855. It has scenic beauty that is a boon for tourist. Solan is also abode of Maa Shoolini.
